When Qatar was awarded with the responsibility to host the 2022 World Cup, one of the stipulations in its bid was that its soon-to-be-constructed open-air football stadiums would be air conditioned. How would a very rich Middle East emirate resolve the issue? Very extravagantly.
The Peninsula has reported that the stadiums would be cooled with a fleet of “solar-powered clouds,” which consisted of remote-controlled drones. The aircrafts were designed and constructed by Dr. Saud Abdul Ghani, head of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Qatar University. Each drone is made of light carbonic materials and would initially cost US$500,000 each.
